About Conference

Showcasing innovative multi-media projects by UC Davis humanities faculty and others, “Beyond the Book” aims to show why digital media matters in humanities scholarship – how it is imagined, researched, and published. From e-Books to web-based multi-media essays, the full gamut of digital publication possibilities will be considered by faculty, administrators, designers, and programmers to chart the limits and possibilities of new forms of scholarship. Clearly, digital humanities offers new techniques for research as well as truly innovative forms of publication. But what are the costs and challenges? How do these new forms of scholarship impact established standards for evaluation, hiring, promotion, and tenure? What kinds of work are enhanced through digital media? What is lost in the move from paper and linear narrative to cyberspace? Exploring these and other questions, “Beyond the Book” will demonstrate that the humanities are at the center of innovation in scholarship and publishing in an increasingly digital environment.

Graduate students and junior faculty are especially encouraged to attend this conference. As emerging scholars in the humanities and social sciences, they are among those who can most benefit from an exploration of the changing environment of research and publication. This conference also represents a unique opportunity to network with leading scholars, publishers and funders of innovative digital scholarship.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided to anyone pre-registered by this Friday, January 25, though registration will remain open through the following week and on-site on the day of the conference. To register, call 752-4327 or email dhi@ucdavis.edu.
